The Community Guide

Description: The Community Guide, developed by a non-Federal Task Force on Community Preventive Services, offers leadership in the evaluation of community, population and health care system strategies to address a variety of public health and health promotion topics.

Information Available: A systematic review of the effectiveness of selected population-based interventions addressing mental health. The chosen programs fit within one of four levels of intervention: health-care system, preventive health promotion and support, media campaigns and policy.


Evidence-Based Practices:
Shaping Mental Health Services toward Recovery

Description: Initiated by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, this national project works toward the fulfillment of three main goals. These include: 1) to help more consumers and families access services that are effective, 2) to help providers of mental health services develop the skills necessary to deliver effective services and 3) to help administrators set up mechanisms to support and maintain these effective services.

The National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP)

Description: The National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP), developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), is a searchable database of reviewed and rated interventions for the prevention and treatment of mental and substance use disorders.

Information Available: Summaries of each intervention which include: descriptive information about the intervention and its targeted outcomes, quality of research and readiness for dissemination ratings, a list of studies and materials submitted for review, and contact information for the intervention developer.

The Ohio Substance Abuse and Mental Illness Coordinating Center of Excellence (Ohio SAMI CCOE)

Description: The Ohio Substance Abuse and Mental Illness Coordinating Center of Excellence (Ohio SAMI CCOE) provides technical assistance for the implementation of the Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment (IDDT) model to service systems, organizations, and providers. The IDDT model an evidence-based practice that improves the quality of life for people with co-occurring severe mental and substance use disorders.

SAMHSA's Co-Occurring Center for Excellence (COCE)

Description: The Co-Occurring Center for Excellence (COCE), launched by The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in September 2003, is the first national resource for the field of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders (COD).

Information Available: Papers and presentations on screening and assessment, evidence-based practices, services integration and system change, and information on technical assistance opportunities.

Description: The Mental Health Work Group includes representatives from multiple disciplines, divisions and centers within the CDC and its sister agency, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). The goal of the work group is to foster collaboration and advancement in the field of mental health in support of the CDC's commitment to promote health, prevent disease and injury, and improve quality of life.

Information Available: Latest news concerning mental health, publications from the National Institutes of Health, general information, alternative therapies, clinical trials, law and policy, specific conditions and populations, coping, research and statistics.

Description: The mission of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is to diminish the burden of mental illness through research. This public health mandate demands the use of powerful scientific tools to achieve better understanding, treatment and, eventually prevention of mental illness.

Information Available: Public education campaign, latest research results, basic knowledge on mental disorders, conferences, clinical trials, funding opportunities, fact sheets, statistics, reports from the Surgeon General and patient education materials.


Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA),
The Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS)

Description: The CMHS leads the national system that delivers mental health services. The goal of this system is to provide the treatment and support services needed by adults with mental disorders and children with serious emotional problems. CMHS works with its partners, including State and local governments, the private sector, service providers, consumers of mental health services and their families to serve those in need of treatment and support.

Information Available: CMHS has eleven program areas: Community Support; Consumer/Survivor; HIV/AIDS; Organization and Financing; Protection and Advocacy; Child, Adolescent and Family; Disaster Mental Health Services; Homelessness; Mental Health Statistics; Special Programs and Initiatives; and State Planning/Mental Health Block Grant. The Center also has seven specific activities that they focus on: School Violence Prevention, Discrimination and Stigma, Managing Anxiety in Times of Crisis, Coping with Traumatic Events, National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and Surgeon General Reports.

Description: The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law protects and advances the rights of adults and children with mental disabilities to exercise meaningful life choices and to enjoy the social, recreational, educational, economic, political and cultural benefits of community living. Bazelon uses a coordinated approach of litigation, policy analysis, coalition-building, public information and technical support for local advocates in four broad areas of advocacy: Advancing Community Membership, Promoting Self-Determination, Ending the Punishment of People with Mental Illnesses for the System's Failures and Preserving Rights.

Bright Futures at Georgetown University: Mental Health

National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI)

Description: Founded in 1979, NAMI is a non-profit, grassroots, self-help, support and advocacy organization of consumers, families and friends of people with severe mental illnesses. NAMI works to achieve equitable services and treatment for more than 15 million Americans living with severe mental illnesses.

Description: The country's oldest and largest non-profit organization addressing all aspects of mental health and mental illness, NMHA works to improve the mental health of all Americans, especially the 54 million individuals with mental disorders, through advocacy, education, research and service.
