On August 1, 2018, under the direction of President Donald Trump, the United States Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor, and Treasury issued a final rule expanding access to short-term health insurance plans. Short-term health plans are limited-duration, non-renewable insurance intended to provide health insurance for individuals experiencing a temporary gap in coverage, such as a period between employment or before employer-sponsored insurance goes into effect. Under the rule, short-term health plans are available for a
longer duration (from three months to a year) and with easier means of renewal.
