The U.S. Supreme Court ruled today that the citizenship question cannot, for now, be added to the 2020 Census. This decision is encouraging and underscores the importance of cross-sector collaboration to ensure a complete and accurate count for Missouri. Missouri Foundation for Health remains committed to supporting trusted community organizations to maximize participation in our state, particularly for those who have been undercounted in the past.
Occurring every 10 years, the census provides an official count of the nation’s population, from which federal funding determinations to states are made. With so many resources at stake, we believe the best guarantee for a fair and equitable distribution of funds is an accurate 2020 Census. The Foundation has been working with diverse partners across the state to prevent a loss of resources and promote a complete count in 2020.
Many communities will still experience fear, mistrust, and confusion about the census. Even without the immigration question, low-income and minority populations are often undercounted, which produces inequitable political representation and reduced federal funds aimed at bolstering our infrastructure and communities. Participation will help ensure that all communities across our state receive their fair share of critical funding for schools, education programs, clinics, hospitals, public transportation, and other vital needs and services. While we understand there may still be hesitation about participating in the 2020 Census, choosing to abstain would be detrimental to our communities. Census data are safeguarded by the strictest confidentiality protections in federal law and cannot be used against any individuals in legal proceedings. Regardless of the Supreme Court’s decision, the Foundation will continue to support a 2020 Census that counts every Missourian.
