The People Have Spoken: Medicaid Expansion

By:

Missouri Foundation for Health is disappointed in the legislature’s decision not to fund Medicaid expansion in the state fiscal year 2022 budget. Last August, a substantial majority of voters approved Amendment 2, which expands Medicaid eligibility to individuals making up to $18,000 per year. In doing so, voters decided that Medicaid expansion is a constitutional right benefiting nearly 250,000 Missourians.

The advantages of Medicaid expansion are well documented and far reaching, and the recently passed American Rescue Plan creates an even greater financial incentive to move forward on this now. The sooner the state proceeds, the sooner Missouri will reap the health, economic, and budgetary benefits that have been shown in 37 other states.

There is no single issue more important to the Foundation’s work and mission than Medicaid expansion. We appreciate the efforts by those policymakers, partners, and community members who are dedicated to carrying out the will of the voters and implementing the program on July 1. We remain steadfast in our commitment to Medicaid expansion, health equity, and ensuring individuals and Missouri families have access to affordable, high-quality health care.
